Closure of the VMCC Sprint Section

Announcement:

Closure of the VMCC Sprint Section

Abridged version first published in the VMCC journal (September 2024)

At the Sprint Section AGM this year, after 40 enjoyable years, the decision was made to close the section.

There were many reasons for this decision, primarily it came down to the lack of suitable and affordable venues, the closure of the Brighton Speed Trials, the UK’s longest running motor racing event, the fact that a new committee, which had been sought since 2015, was not forthcoming.

The remaining funds in the sections account were dispersed equal between The VMCC, Cancer Research and the British Heart Foundation, unanimously voted for at the AGM.

The committee, as was, would like to thank the VMCC and its membership for all the help and support given to the Sprint Section to run many memorable days sprinting at varied venues across the UK (most notably the 1000 Bikes at Brands Hatch and the Brighton Speed Trials), former committee members, participants, the tech inspection team, entry secretaries, track prep volunteers, the ACU.

Re. Brighton Speed Trials - Brighton & Hove Motor Club (B&HMC), MS UK, the ACU, the various officers who assisted each event including Clerks of the Course, track and paddock marshals, medics, fire and breakdown crews, timekeepers, announcers, photographers, members of the public who supported the event for over 100 years, Brighton & Hove City Council and Frosts Cars who continued to support the historic one-of-a-kind event over many years.

Times have changed for the Brighton Speed Trials, despite Brighton & Hove Council’s help, the new road layouts, the closing of the terraces (viewing area above the arches), and the enormous cost involved in providing required safety measures, additional security and many other costs, B&HMC had to make the heartbreaking decision that 2023’s event was the last one as they’d been running the event at a loss for a number of years and could not continue to do so. Ultimately the track had to meet the high standards required of both MS UK for the cars and the ACU for the motorcycles and three wheelers
